Chinese Herbal Medicine is an important part in our great treasure house of Chinese medicine, using natural substances in specific combinations which mirror the relative strengths of the body and the forces acting upon it. The earliest texts describing the properties and therapeutic applications of herbs and combinations, or formulas, date back to at least the late Han period in the 2nd century CE, although almost certainly the knowledge therein significantly predates these written collections. Since then many works have extended, organised and expanded upon the medicinal use of natural substances according to Chinese medicine theories, and in the modern era pharmacological, laboratory and clinical research has continued to explore ways that these natural substances can overcome disease, manage symptoms and benefit health.

According to basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine, all illnesses can be classified by their nature. The principle of application of herbs, is to select the herbal medicine according to the properties of herbs and nature of diseases. Meanwhile, the active chemical components and the pharmacological effects of the natural drugs are also considered. Therefore Chinese herbal treatment provides a match between the pathology of disease and the pharmacology of the natural products, like a lock and key.
